Birdlife International (BI) has designated the Puerto Princesa Underground River National Park as an Endemic Bird Area and Important Bird Area. That’s because 165 avian species (15 of which endemic to Palawan) have been found in the park. But birds are not the only wildlife species that you can marvel at while you’re in Sabang, there are many other animals that have found sanctuary in this national park.

There are about 30 mammal species that are said to be residing in the jungles of the PPUR. Most of them can be found along the shoreline and in the forest canopy. Some these include long-tailed macaque, Palawan porcupine, bearded pig, Bearcat, sea cow and Palawan stink badger. The long-tailed macaque is the only primate living in the park.

Reptiles also abound in this part of Sabang with nearly 20 species identified. Eight of these reptile species is endemic to the province. Some of the reptile residents of Sabang jungles include the green crested lizard, hawksbill sea turtle and the common reticulated python.

There are also ten species of amphibians in the park. The Philippine woodland frog and the Philippine flat-headed frog included in the list.Bats, which you’ll find plenty inside the Underground River, have also made the place their home. There are about nine species of bats that can be found inside the PPUR cave like the whip spider and Swiftlet.
